UTEACH Pathway

UTEACH Pathway Overview

The UTEACH (Urban Teaching Academy) pathway is a unique opportunity for students to combine pedagogy and practice in a personalized credential program designed to fully prepare future teachers in a hands-on supportive school setting.  Program features include the following:

  • UTEACH is a yearlong student teaching residency-like program held at Long Beach Unified School District elementary school sites.
  • UTEACH offers personalized attention from University faculty and school based personnel.
  • UTEACH course work is linked to real teaching in a real classroom, and your space is reserved in every course.
  • UTEACH methods courses are held off-campus. No campus parking problems.
  • Student teach half-day 3 days a week, 1 full day, and take classes in the afternoon.
  • Friday is a working day so you can earn money as a substitute or college aide.
  • UTEACH faculty support, instruct and advise you on site in a school based, personalized setting.All Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà programs are committed to incorporating Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Pedagogies and Anti-Bias curriculum and practices that support all students in learning.

Long Beach Teacher Residency

Through a grant with LBUSD, you can earn up to $34,000 in financial support for a year of student teaching! To be eligible for the stipend:
 
Pathway 1: Pursuing the dual credential in Educational Specialist and Multiple Subject through the UDCP program.
Pathway 2: Pursuing the Spanish bilingual authorization (BILA) in addition to the Multiple Subject credential through the UTEACH program.

UTEACH Information Sessions

The UTEACH Pathway contains the same coursework as the Traditional Pathway however the course sequence is structured differently and it is a cohort program.  The UTEACH pathway begins only in the Fall semester only.  Candidates must successfully completed the pre-requisites and co-requisites courses and the Liberal Studies core courses (ITEP only) prior to beginning UTEACH. The Pedagogy/Methods courses are offered off campus at a partner elementary school in Long Beach Unified School District.  

Pedagogy/Methods courses are combined with student teaching during the Fall and Spring semesters.  All requirements for student teaching and admission to program must be met at the time of application to the credential program.

UTEACH Applications are due no later than June 1st. This is a final deadline. Applicants are encouraged to submit their application well in advance of the deadline to ensure that all requirements are met for program admission.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted. 

Candidates must meet the following admission criteria to be eligible for admission to the UTEACH Pathway:

  • Submission of a complete application on MyCED prior to the appropriate deadline
  • G.P.A. of at least 2.75 for the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units, or 2.67 overall
  • Completion and passage of oral interview with program faculty
  • Current TB test verification
  • Demonstration of Subject Matter Competence
  • Successful completion of pre-requisite courses with a B or better, co-requisite courses and Liberal Studies core courses, including EDEL 300 (ITEP students only)
  • Interview with a program faculty or group interview with a UTEACH Faculty

Please keep in mind that the program application is separate from admission to the university.  Post-Bac students and those students that are graduating with a degree (bachelors or masters) should apply to the university online through by the appropriate deadline in addition to applying for the credential program. Most candidates will apply to the university first to take the pre-requisite courses and then apply to the program while enrolled in the pre-requisite courses.  A small number of candidates that may have already completed the pre-requisite courses will need to apply to both the program and the university at the same time.  University admission does not constitute program admission.  The university application is not necessary for students in the ITEP Liberal Studies program.
